A custom made picnic table offers advantages over the cheaply made roadside variety. The inexpensive types are typically built of construction grade wood. Problems include splinters, poor weathering, and plain old ugliness. Ask your table maker to use a higher grade wood. My choices would include: cyprus, redwood, cedar, mahogany and teak.
