Copper and Beech kitchen remodelThis compact bamboo kitchen was commissioned in 2006. The design was driven by my client’s desire to open up the available space, maximize the storage and its access and to vastly improve the work flow. I designed a scheme that features deep, voluminous dovetailed maple drawers for storage that are easily accessed behind each lower door. The horizontal aspect of the bamboo draws out the space and the tiered upper cabinets which are lit from above and below and adds a dimension of height. The cabinetry is finished inside and out with a durable clear satin lacquer. The raised counter of end grain bamboo butcher block is sealed with shellac and finished with multiple coats of tung oil/varnish and is supported by a truncated and bisected bamboo cone.
As a studio/custom furniture maker, my task is to properly interpret my client’s complete vision into a sophisticated, well proportioned, perfectly functioning piece that utilizes the finest appropriate materials and workmanship. An heirloom quality piece that can truly last for generations requires the finest craftsmanship, a flawless, repairable finish and subtle details that evoke enduring style through the decades.
