 Walnut Pie Crust Tea Table in the Philadelphia StyleThis pie crust tea table resembles several pieces of fine furniture that were made in Philadelphia in the mid-18th Century and are now in museums and private collections. Numerous different styles of what is called tilt top tea tables were made during time period. This particular style of table got its name from the scalloping design on the table’s peripheral edges that resemble those on a pie. An interesting characteristic of this table is that the top rotates on a pivot similar to a lazy Susan. This allowed ladies who sat around the table at tea time to get their tea cups, utensils, sugar, milk, etc. by rotating them around the table to one another. The table top can also tilt up vertically (As in the picture) so that it can be easily stored and displayed against a wall or in a corner. The top of this custom made piece measures 30 inches in diameter and was cut and hand carved from a single Claro walnut plank. The ball and claw legs and pedestal were hand carved with acanthus leaves similar to the style that was characteristic of furniture in this period. A brass catch holds the table horizontally in place when in use.
