![]() Cherry side-chairThis chair, one of a set of six, presented me with a "Eureka!" moment when I discovered that I could induce a twist in the core material (Italian poplar) by splitting each laminate partway down its length. It allows the sinuous bend in the back and at the same time lets the back support "leaves" cup the sitter. Design details match a trestle table the clients own, with through-tenons supporting the seat. I pointed out to my client, who builds custom bicycles, that the split of the back mirrored the split in a bike frame's down-tube, which allows clamping of the seatpost.
I love designing and building chairs. They present a challenge: they must be strong, pleasing to the eye from all angles, and comfortable as well. Over the last twenty-five years I have made dozens of different styles of chair: sinuous plywood laminations, Chinese Chippendale replicas, settees in the style of Greene and Greene: copy or custom; a single chair, or a dozen.
