This cut open corner from a mahogany door shows the true mortise and tennon joint. A time honored technique, it allows for a strong glue bond between the sides (or cheeks) of the tennon and the sides of the mortise. Note a little bit of room in the width and depth of the mortise to allow for natural expansion and contraction of the solid wood members. This reduces the likelihood of cracking and glue joint failure. |
